In order to maximize the efficiency of nonlinear wavelength conversion it is sometimes necessary to place a doubling crystal or an OPO inside the cavity of a laser. The nonlinear conversion usually strongly modifies laser performance so in modeling both the laser and the nonlinear process must be included.

Similarly microchip lasers are often Q-switched using Cr doped YAG crystals inside the laser cavity. Modeling this laser requires treatment of both the laser medium and the saturable absorber medium.
